What Else is New, October?

A guide to the beginning of fall in the Coastal Bend

By: Julieta Hernandez

October is where it starts: temperatures finally begin to drop below 89, strawberries go out of season, and it’s not the craziest thing in the world to see somebody wearing a cardigan.

Here’s how you can spend your days in cool October now that the hottest days are behind us (for now).

1. Surftoberfest on October 6th

brbr

That’s right. Water Street created an Oktoberfest that caters tobrour very specific south Texas surf culture. If beer, buddies and German foodbrsound like a party to you, then come join the party outside of the Texas SurfbrMuseum.

2. Texas JAZZ Festival from October 19-21

brbr

Heritage Park gleams like an old Jazz song during this traditionbrof decades, the Texas Jazz Festival. This event is FREE and features Jazzbrplayers from all over the country playing different types of jazz on three differentbrstages.

3. Dia de Los Muertos Festival on October 27th

brbr

Celebrating the living, the dead, and the spirit of the night isbrwhat makes the Dia de Los Muertos Festival the third largest Dia de Los Muertosbrfestival in the United States.

 4. Ride-in Young Frankenstein on October 12th

brbr

Mel Gibson’s version of the classic makes for an after-darkbrdrive in date, or a spooky outing with friends who give in to jump scares.

5.  Haunted Houses

brbr

Now, we don’t recommend visiting gurgling demons, whisperybrghouls, or jittering zombies for the faint of heart. But if you’re reallybrfeeling in season, the more haunted the houses of Corpus Christi get, thebrbetter. Fright Night and Ghost at the Lexington are notoriously top picks inbrthe area.

6. The Rocky Horror Show: throughout October

brbr

The Aurora Arts theater knows horror, science fiction, andbrglamour. Tickets for the local production will be available until October 31stbrand this is one show you won’t want to miss. Although beware, it is not for thebrfaint of heart!

7. Beach in the Fall

brbr

You don’t have to get in the water to make the seashore abrdelight all year long. The month of October is perfect for a cooler, emptierbrbeach: bonfires, bird watching, and long walks on the beach (we don’t knowbranyone who isn’t a fan of that!) is the best way to take advantage.
