The Rockport Center for the Arts is featuring sixbrmember artists in the prestigious exhibition, Standing out 2019. The opening reception will be held at 4 pmbron August 3 at the Rockport Center for the Arts, and the show will run through LaborbrDay weekend. The event is free and open to the public.

The firstbr“Merit Show” at Rockport Center for the Arts opened in July of 1985. Thebrartists chosen were Evelyn Atkinson (also Art Festival Poster Artist 1998),brGertrude Bryant, Kathy Sayre, Cookie Tillman, and Fred Wright. While before thebrartists were picked based on a popular vote at the time, the process hasbrevolved to a guest juror selecting five artists of merit, and the public choosingbrthe sixth by popular vote.

Continuing the 35-year tradition, sixbrenriching Rockport Center for the Arts members will display their creativebrpieces in the gallery. As part of last year’s Currents Exhibition, the annual All-Members exhibit – Juror JoebrSchenk, the former Director at the Art Museum of South Texas, chose fivebrartists from the show to be part of a small group exhibition to be held thisbrAugust.

This year’s exhibit will feature collage artist KellybrSchaub who became a full-time resident of Rockport after riding out HurricanebrHarvey. Her work focuses on mixed media collages with a vintage ephemera on onebrof a kind papers. Inspired by energetic and vibrant paintings, Robin Hazardbrfrom Freeport, Texas will also feature her work alongside Kelly and the others.brWith a Fine Arts degree focused on painting, drawing, and printmaking, Robinbrhas exhibited her work throughout the United States. Also featured in thebrexhibition is Sarah Fedak’s latest series of collage, wall-dependent sculpturesbrmade of beach plastic (reclaimed trash) and wood.

Elizabeth Misitano studies in Italy, and experience withbrChinese artist Liu Bolin shares her latest body of work with the Rockportbrcommunity. Misitano explores nature and her relationship with fauna. She worksbrprimarily in ballpoint pen, layering the medium to create subtle color shiftsbrand depth. Misitano taught this technique at Rockport Center for the Arts inbr2018.

Although Sally Mitchell first enteredbrthe Arts as a dancer, she later took up photography after settling down inbrRockport. Inspired by the ‘dances’ of the egrets, herons, and shorebirds as shebrremembers seeing during her walks at Rockport Beach Park Mitchell is unafraidbrto take risks. Sally likes to experiment with photo editing to transformbrphotographs into highly stylized, even fanciful images.

Last but not least is Rebecca Bridges Rice, whose love ofbrart began in high school. Her diverse styles of painting, sculpture andbrthree-dimensional design have defined her as a prolific fine artist, workingbrmostly in oils, but occasionally in acrylics and watercolor.
