The summer season just got a whole lot sweeter with the recent opening of Sandbox Beach Bar, the newest addition to the Michael J. Ellis Seawall—and first in almost 40 years. This fresh destination elevates the Coastal Bend’s summer scene with direct waterfront access and an atmosphere that welcomes the whole family. Visitors can enjoy food trucks, refreshing drinks and live music, along with fun recreational options like pickleball and volleyball courts, and a dedicated playground for kids.

Although Corpus Christi certainly holds beach-town status, there has yet to be a beach bar with family-friendly amenities. “It is exciting to be able to bring the first of its kind to our community. We wanted to focus on creating a family-friendly space for people to come together and spend more time outdoors,” ownership expressed. “We live in such a beautiful climate, with warm weather basically year-round. We wanted to [create] an environment where people can really enjoy the seawall and have views of the Gulf.”

The location is a bonus in addition to everything Sandbox has to offer. The atmosphere is vibrant, with live music and the laughter of kids playing nearby filling the warm, salty air. On any given day, you can find a variety of food trucks with a rotating selection of local favorites, and the bar is equally enticing, offering specialty cocktails and ice-cold beers. Parents can relax with a drink in hand while the kids make the most of the amenities, or even join in a friendly pick-up sand volleyball game.

Fostering community connection is important, and Sandbox Beach Bar has quickly become a local hub since its opening this past spring. The venue has already hosted a variety of pop-up events and plans for many more, aiming to highlight local, small businesses, such as a Pilates class or a farmers market.

“We feel very confident that we’re building a really special place here,” ownership shared. “We want the best for the community. We want to see the city grow. We want to see the people who have lived here be rewarded here, and enjoy these times with their kids and make memories they can share.”

The vision extends beyond the establishment itself and views the new destination as a true investment in the community. With Sandbox Beach Bar, playing in the sand has a whole new meaning this summer—and yes, building sandcastles is still highly encouraged.
