Reconstructing Confidence?

By: Dr. Vijay Bindingnavele, Corpus Christi Institute of Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery

Every year more than 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. In some cases, the after effects of breast cancer and breast cancer treatment can leave women uncomfortable and unhappy with their bodies and self-image. Through reconstructive breast surgery, Drs. Vijay Bindingnavele and Cassidy Hinojosa aim to help regain confidence and boost their self-esteem.

Treatment for breast cancer is often multi-modal and involves a team of physicians and surgeons especially trained for the treatment of cancer. The reconstructive process is coordinated within this team of physicians to optimize both treatment of the cancer and restoration of body image. Surgical treatment often involves removal of all or a portion of the breast or breasts. Breast reconstruction after full or partial removal of breast tissue is often done in the immediate setting (directly after breast tissue removal) or may be done in a delayed setting given the indications for other types of treatment such radiation or chemotherapy.

After breast cancer diagnosis, consultations are performed in order to develop the appropriate team of physicians that will optimize breast cancer treatment and ensure that the most fitting treatment plan is reached to fit the patient’s needs. Consultations with the plastic surgeon involve review of medical and surgical history, physical evaluation, and discussion in regards to options for the surgical breast reconstructive process. There are many options for breast reconstructive surgeries including expander- and implant-based surgeries, use of the patient’s own tissues (skin and fat) for reconstruction of the breast, and use of a combination of these processes to achieve the patient’s desires and best meet their expectations. Breast reconstruction after requires multiple surgeries and a surgical reconstructive process that lasts 1-2 years.

With over a decade of experience in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, the founder of the Corpus Christi Institute of Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery, Dr. Vijay Bindingnavele strives to fulfill his patients’ expectations and deliver the best results possible for each and every individual.  Dr. Cassidy Hinojosa joined Dr. Vijay Bindingnavele at the Corpus Christi Institute of Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery in August 2018. Dr. Hinojosa’s fascination with different types of reconstructive procedures has fostered a passion for plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Hinojosa enjoys having the opportunity to be involved in the care of a cancer survivor and developing close relationships with patients in order to best meet their needs.
