Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in Corpus Christi

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and local organizations host community events in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is annually celebrated from September 15 to October 15 to recognize the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture and achievements of the United States.

Hispanic culture, tradition and legacy are woven into the fabric of South Texas, and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC), local businesses and organizations are hosting a diverse set of programs to celebrate and educate. The public is invited to attend theatre productions, galas, festivals, workshops and more all month long in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month in Corpus Christi.

Late Night Loteria

Where: Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, Anchor Ballroom| When: Sept. 25, 8 p.m.-12 a.m.

The Islander Cultural Alliance (ICA) invites students and the community out for an evening of late-night loteria. Attendees can enjoy free food and win prizes as they play on their own customized loteria board! Arrive at 7:30 p.m. to create your own board.

49th Annual ICHCC Gala

Where: Holiday Inn Downtown Marina | When: Oct. 27, 6-11 p.m.

The Instituto de Cultura Hispánica de Corpus Christi hosts its 49th Annual Gala on Sept. 27 at the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina. This year’s celebration honors local veterans while showcasing Hispanic heritage through live Latin music by Rinkinkaya, dinner, dancing and a silent auction supporting ICHCC programs. Tickets are available for purchase online.

“Electricdad” 

Where: Wilson Theatre | When: Sept. 30 through Oct. 5, Tues-Sat @ 7:30 p.m. / Sun @ 2:00 p.m. / No intermission

Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents “Electricidad” by Luis Alfaro at the Wilson Theatre. Directed by Marco Muñoz, this modern retelling of Sophocles’ “Electra” unfolds in an East L.A. barrio, where themes of family and revenge take center stage. Recommended for ages 18+, the production also features a free pre-show conversation on Sept. 25 and a bonus improv show after Friday’s performance. Tickets start at $8 and are available for purchase online.

Bailando Dance Festival

Where: Performing Arts Center and other locations around TAMU-CC’s campus | When: Oct. 9-11, Various times throughout the weekend

For over 20 years, the Bailando International Dance Festival has spotlighted artistic excellence in the Coastal Bend dance community. The festival’s vision is to cultivate a vibrant dance community that fosters cultural exchange and artistic growth. This year’s festival offers a diverse and exciting lineup of performances from renowned companies such as Ballet Nepantla, Compañía Cámara Danza UNA, Ilse Orozco + Carlos Nuñez, as well as local favorites. Islander Percussion Ensemble Performance

Where: Performing Arts Center | When: Oct. 15, 7:30-9 p.m.

The TAMU-CC Percussion Ensemble takes the stage at the Performing Arts Center for a concert celebrating Hispanic and Latin musical traditions. From Mexican marimba to samba, steel pan and modern percussion, the performance showcases a vibrant mix of styles influenced by the university’s diverse student community.

IBC Bank Mariachi Festival

Where: IBC Bank | When: Oct. 4, 6-10 p.m.

The IBC Bank Mariachi Festival returns as a free community event in support of Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Guests can enjoy live performances from groups including TAMU-CC’s Mariachi de la Isla and UTRGV’s Mariachi Aztlán, along with a mercado and food trucks, while sponsors receive VIP perks like a taco bar, tequila tasting and premium seating.

Table Top Ofrenda Class

Where: K Space Contemporary | When: Oct. 5, 2-4 p.m.

Hosted by K Space Contemporary and the Día de los Muertos Festival, this family-friendly workshop invites participants to create personalized desktop ofrendas. Led by mother-daughter duo Rachel and Rylie, guests will learn about the tradition while decorating with candles, marigolds and colorful materials to honor loved ones.
