Portland Rotary Club Announces Patriotic Event Saluting Heroes

Recognize and honor a hero in your life this Memorial Day with the Portland Rotary Club.

For the first time in its history, the Rotary Club of Portland, Texas, salutes our community’s countless heroes this Memorial Day with U.S. flags displayed in Portland along Buddy Ganem Drive. Among the heroes whose names are submitted include those who fought for our freedom in any military branch, current veterans, law enforcement officers, firefighters, medical personnel, other first responders, and teachers who sacrifice their time and talents for the youth.

Rotary Club President Jimmy Earnest expressed his excitement to partner with local sponsors and donors, together with fellow Rotarians, to honor so many who deserve this patriotic recognition.

“It’s important to honor those who have given so much of themselves for others, for freedom, and for the benefit of our community,” he said. “A hero can be anyone who has made an impact in your life. Heroes are those who serve, anywhere and everywhere – and we have plenty of them right here in our town of Portland, Texas. It’s time to honor them, and at the same time donate toward a cause that promotes goodwill and serves the community they call home.”

While this is a first-time event for Rotary, Earnest said he is hopeful the community response will be encouraging and allow Rotary to consider bringing it back again and again.

The U.S. Flags will remain the property of Rotary for this purpose with consideration for future events, while the recognition tag with each honoree’s name will be given to the donors who contributed.
