On May 19, TekYard — a Carnegie Technologies “hub” that sells technology products for all ages — opened a location in La Palmera Mall. The store sells home security technology, “telemedicine” technology, and “tek toys” like drones, motorized vehicles, and robots.

TekYard is currently located in a kiosk on the second floor of the mall, outside of Dilliard’s. According to the TekYard website, a full storefront is expected to open in late 2018. TekYard’s La Palmera location is its first and only location, although TekYard’s parent company, Carnegie Technologies, is based in Austin. Allison Hoffman, a communications manager working with TekYard, said the La Palmera location was chosen because TekYard is in the process of “assessing the most strategic locations” in the Coastal Bend, as well as across the state of Texas, that would enable the company to “unlock the concept’s full potential.”

But, what exactly is the concept? Hoffman emphasized that the store intends to provide technologies that have the potential to simplify consumers’ lives. “Our goal is to introduce curious minds to new technologies,” Hoffman said. “We’re a playground of curiosity, imagination, and creation, helping people to explore new modes of interaction and communication.”

One interesting offering at the TekYard location is the “Bobble Shop” — a station where a customer can create a bobblehead, or “3D avatar,” from a photo of themselves. The station is intended to provide a personalized consumer experience, and attract people of all ages.

TekYard’s hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
