Everyone knows the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty – Princess Aurora falls under an evil spell that can only be broken by true love’s kiss. However, next weekend, the Corpus Christi Ballet will perform a unique retelling of the iconic story of Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty, with choreography by co-artistic director Alex Emory.

Emory says, “This is one of those ballets where you can make things a little bit different. [The production] is enjoyable to watch because of all the different kinds of dancers. You’ll want to see their interpretation of it, how they express it.”

Although each role is challenging to perform in its own right, the role specifically of Princess Aurora is said to be one of the most difficult. For Corpus Christi Ballet’s production, the role of Princess Aurora will be played by Elizabeth Hooper.

“[Hooper] is very tall and just delicate and gorgeous. It’s the perfect role for her,” Emory commends. Carabosse will be played by Mia Carvallo with Chrissy Carter and Susannah Urban as the Lilac Fairy, and the prince will feature Adrian Fry, from Ballet West in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“[Sleeping Beauty] is entertaining for families and especially for kids,” Emory shares. “It is fun to see the different fairytale characters come to life.”  The audience will have the ability to watch this classic tale unfold in a new and exciting way. Each dancer on stage will bring something extra to the roles and overall, offer a unique rendition of the beloved story.

So, gather the family and make plans to attend this magical show! The Sleeping Beauty will be performed at the American Bank Center Selena Auditorium on April 23 and 24. Tickets are on sale now.
