This year’s premier cycling event, H-E-B Conquer the Coast, will look different for cyclists across the region. Ordinarily, the event gives a unique approach to cycling in Texas, offering a picturesque route around Corpus Christi Bay, including landscapes over the Harbor Bridge, ferrying across the Corpus Christi Ship Channel – often accompanied by dolphins, and a 15-mile stretch of Mustang Island that concludes with iconic views along Ocean Drive.
Although the familiar H-E-B Conquer the Coast course remains closed for the 2020 event, experienced and novice cyclists will participate in the 66-mile journey along alternative routes, at their own pace – including over multiple days. As a special promotion for virtual cyclists, those who register will receive a top-quality, sublimated cycling jersey, and a completion medal with distinctive graphics celebrating this year’s unique virtual riding experience.
“Conquer the Coast is a huge annual ride that drives local tourism, encourages community health, and raises funds for local scholarships,” said United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce President & CEO John LaRue. “We are excited to push through this difficult year and adapt the ride to a virtual format. We’ve had a great response from the bicycle community and look forward to a successful virtual ride.”
H-E-B Conquer the Coast continues to promote cycling as an environmentally friendly and healthy transportation alternative. Contributions from the event benefit worthy organizations, including the TAMU-CC Islander Athletic Fund and the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce Foundation (UCCCC).
The TAMU-CC Islander Athletic Fund provides funds to student-athletes at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with scholarships and sport operating budgets. The mission of the UCCCC Foundation strengthens and empowers leaders and entrepreneurs building positive impacts in Corpus Christi. Local programs such as Leadership Corpus Christi, the Mano a Mano Scholarship Program, and Lemonade Day continue cultivating the ensuing wave of professionals in the Coastal Bend.
