The traditional approach of beginning a new fitness routine when the calendar begins again can often feel tiresome and excessive. But the start of a new year, with its opportunity for reflection and forward-looking intentions, can also be an ideal time to establish or enhance a habit. If you’ve included “get active” on your list but are unsure where to begin—or, as is sometimes more challenging, how to stay consistent—let certified personal trainer and AE Fitness owner Alain Escobar offer some inspiration.
Kylie Cooper: “New Year, New You” can be overwhelming. From your experience, what’s a more realistic and sustainable way for people to approach wellness as a new year begins?
Alain Escobar: A more realistic approach is to take the pressure off and start small. Don’t overthink the “new year” concept. Focus on one simple habit you can start and manage today. As you build consistency, you naturally learn what to add or remove from your routine, and that’s how sustainable wellness is created.
KC: For someone who’s been intimidated by gyms or group fitness, what advice do you have for making that first step feel less daunting?
AE: Choose a gym where respect is the standard. At AE Fitness, I lead with a zero-tolerance mindset for bullying or judgment. Everyone is welcomed, supported and encouraged. Once people feel safe and seen, that first step becomes a lot less intimidating.
KC: Many people struggle with all-or-nothing thinking. What’s one small habit or mindset shift you’ve seen make the biggest difference over time?
AE: The biggest mindset shift is understanding that fitness is a marathon, not a sprint. When you stop chasing perfection and start celebrating small wins such as lifting a little heavier, moving a little faster or feeling more capable, progress becomes easier and more enjoyable.
KC: Beyond physical exercise, what non-workout elements do you encourage people to focus on?
AE: Focus on all the non-workout elements: sleep, stress levels, mobility, recovery and daily routines. I suggest starting with whatever area needs the most attention and build healthier habits one step at a time.
KC: Consistency is often harder than intensity. What strategies do you use to help clients stay on track?
AE: We lean heavily on community here at AE Fitness: friendships, challenges, personal records and good energy. When people enjoy the environment and look forward to showing up, motivation naturally stays alive—and yes, there’s always dancing between sets.
KC: One of AE Fitness’ pillars is community. How does being part of a supportive group influence someone’s progress and overall well-being?
AE: Being part of a supportive community boosts progress and well-being in a way that’s hard to describe. At AE Fitness, we give back to our community by feeding the houseless, supporting foster children and donating clothes to different organizations; and that act creates a deeper sense of purpose. When people feel connected, they stay accountable and grow in every area of life.
KC: You specialize in functional training and strength conditioning. Why is functional movement important for everyday life?
AE: Functional movement is essential because it shows up in real life. If lifting everyday items hurts your back or standing up feels hard, that’s a sign. Training functional strength builds balance, coordination and confidence so you can move better in your daily life, not just in the gym.
KC: What are a few simple, do-around-the-house movements you recommend to start feeling better today?
AE: You don’t need a gym to start feeling better today; your house and your neighborhood can become your training ground. One of my favorites is the “commercial break workout.” Every time you’re watching TV, use the breaks to knock out squats, push-ups or a quick plank. When you’re doing chores, turn them into movement lunges while you’re picking things up, calf raises while brushing your teeth or hip mobility while you wait for your coffee to brew.
If you can get outside, take a walk with a little purpose: Pick a landmark and walk to it faster each day. These small, habits build strength, energy and confidence without needing equipment, just a willingness to move.
