It’s mid-January already! How are you doing with the fitness commitments you made to yourself at the beginning of the year? If you’ve become prone to finding any reason to forgo the exercise —making dinner, getting the kids ready for bed, or hitting the snooze button for just 5 more minutes, then perhaps joining a running club might be just what you need to boost your willpower to get up and out.
Lucy’s Snackbar and the Downtown Management District (DMD) have partnered to bring together advanced and beginner runners alike. On Wednesdays at 5:30 pm, meet up with the Downtown Run Club in front of Lucy’s for a 2-mile excursion through area.
Lucy’s owner, Jessica Gignac, shares how the idea for a new running club came to fruition.
“I ran all throughout high school and have continued running into adulthood. I’m not a social runner per se; I usually run by myself since I rarely get a lot of quiet time. Still, I always wanted to join a non-competitive running group,” says Gignac. “When the DMD, Hoka, and another local runner reached out, we thought it was a good time, post-COVID, to start a responsible and socially distanced run club.”
Lucy’s and the DMD’s partnership provides resources and the creative minds needed to heighten Downtown’s growth. More than cocktails and dining, Downtown Corpus Christi is also a beautiful spot to be active and enjoy the view. Gignac adds that she hopes the Downtown Run Club can hit a good stride (pun intended) with all running levels in conjunction with the DMD.
“To me, downtown is the perfect spot because when you finish, you can roam around to the different shops and restaurants without having to get back in your car. Now that we’ve done our inaugural run, we all had fun meeting new people and running with old friends.”
The Downtown Run Club is open to all ages and levels. No sign up needed; come for a run and stay to support downtown businesses. As a bonus, they’re encouraging locals to stay active with the club by giving a free shirt to those who come for 3 runs and more.
“You can be at any level of running; novice, sprinter, long-distance, doesn’t matter! The more, the merrier,” Gignac says.
So, if you’re looking for a little motivation or simply want to try something new, head downtown next Wednesday for a run with good company and an even better view!
