Aroh Arzate – Village People

Art Exhibition at KSpace Contemporary

Aroh Arzate’s exhibition Village People explores Queer Mexican identity through paintings depicting his experience as a gay man in combination with childhood memories and nostalgia. Non-heteronormative sexuality is often shunned or avoided in Mexican American culture because of deep-rooted traditional values. “I explore Mexican-American culture through a queer lens. The conflicting philosophies of what it means to be a man are fabulous. My work uses queer symbolism and nudity to challenge ideals of machismo, an aggressive and exaggerated sense of male pride.” Seminude figures, sexual innuendo, and cultural symbolism create visions of queer utopia. Interactions between these markers of identity depict light-hearted scenes to fuel awareness, conversation, and introspection.
