Joe Peña: Corpus Nocturne
Art Exhibition at K Space Contemporary - Clower Gallery
Corpus Nocturne is a series of nightscapes by Corpus Christi artist Joe Peña. In his work, Peña explores elements of ethnic identity, including aspects of cultural, familial and social issues, relating to his Mexican heritage. The paintings in Corpus Nocturne depict food trucks, store fronts, and other similar venues as allegories for the concept of home as an internal sense of place, not merely a physical location.
Joe Peña is an Associate Professor of Art at Texas A & M University – Corpus Christi (TAMUCC). Prior to receiving his MFA Degree in 2005, Pena was recruited to assist in the formation of MB Modern, a contemporary art gallery in New York City. He later worked at Babcock Gallery (now Driscoll/Babcock Galleries), a leader in American Modernism for over 150 years. In 2006, Peña became the Public Arts Manager for the City of Corpus Christi, where he served for a year and a half before assuming the role of Gallery Director and joining the Faculty at TAMUCC. In 2017, Pena was appointed to Associate Professor of Art with a concentration in Painting.
Peña’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. He has been featured in numerous print and online publications including Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection, Los Tejanos: Chicano Art from the Collection of Cheech Marin, Guitar Aficionado, Texas Monthly, The Austin American Statesman, ArtScope New England, and Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education. Selected collections include the Cheech Marin Collection of Art, Los Angeles, CA; James Hutson, Los Angeles, CA; The Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park and Museum, Hamilton, OH; La Universidad de Oaxaca, Oaxaca City, Mex.; Del Mar College, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and The Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, TX.
