The holiday season is finally upon us. That means cold weather, the smell of pine, and classic holiday songs blaring while cruising the Coastal Bend to “ooh” and “ahh” at our favorite holiday light displays. Take some time this weekend, stop at your favorite local coffee shop for a warm drink, and take a drive using our guide to the best and brightest local holiday light displays.
Candy Cane Lane
Kick off your tour with the iconic, Candy Cane Lane. Every year residents of Schanen Estates deck out their front lawns for a delightful wonderland of giant candy canes and over 300 holiday lights. Drive or admire the four streets on foot: Donegal Drive, Wooldridge Road, McAlpin Drive, and Killamet Drive. Just look for the giant light-up candy canes...you can't miss them!
We are so grateful for the revival of this historic holiday experience. In the 1960’s, the blocks of Chaparral transformed into a festal block party. Today the tradition lives on with a joyous holiday shopping experience, rows of Christmas lights illuminating the street, and local storefronts sparkling with their best decorations to celebrate the season. Don't forget to stop by La Retama Park to marvel at the Downtown Management District's tree display and then back down Shoreline Blvd for the 66-foot tall H-E-B Christmas tree!
Mr. Bill’s Wonderland
Bringing all the holiday charm is Mr. Bill’s Wonderland on 3242 Hampton Street. For two decades, Mr. Bill’s Wonderland features more than your average Christmas light decorations. With a choir, a Nativity scene, a train, toys, and Santa Claus, Mr. Bill’s Wonderland is a must-see every year.
Mazoch Holiday Display
You haven’t seen it all, until you visit the Mazoch’s family holiday display on 15301 Isabella Court across the bridge on North Padre Island. Their famous display appeared on ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight” in 2015 and for good reason. Every year until 10 p.m. the Mazoch’s exhibit the glory of Christmas on the island, featuring pelicans, fish, and sea themes mixed with traditional holiday décor.
Life-size Nativity Scene
Okay, I was wrong – you really haven’t seen it all until you experience the living and breathing Nativity scene produced by the Bocanegra family. With live doves, life-like barn animals, fire, and so much more, this ornamented home on 4826 Willowbrook Drive never fails to impress during the holiday season.
Keeping the magic of Santa alive, are the Millikan's. With their adorable candy-red colored mailbox in the front lawn of their home on 1026 Belmeade Drive, Santa’s Mailbox offers young and old believers alike the chance to send a letter to Santa. The Millikan's created this project in spirit of their love for Santa and Christmas. If you decide to write a letter to Santa Claus and leave a return address, Santa (the Millikans) will send back a personalized reply. The last day to mail your letter and receive a reply from Santa is December 24.
Garcia Holiday Light Show
During the week from 6-10 pm and until 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, catch the Garcia’s Holiday Light Show. Stop by 3425 Austin St. to catch more than 50,000 lights flash around in sync to holiday tunes on the radio on channel 100.7 FM.
