The new year is here, and for some, making resolutions are helpful for growth or staying on track. However, not all resolutions have to be absolute with quitting this or starting that. They can be as fulfilling as finally trying that one thing you’ve always wanted to do, or engaging in more of the local land and everything in between. We’ve put together a mini list of New Year’s resolutions to try once or continue with throughout the year ahead.
Finally try that yoga class. Nip stress in the bud this year with movement and breath. From Yoga Time Studios to Crossroads Yoga, our local yoga scene is fit with wild and traditional forms of yoga.
Switch up your coffee run. Take a chance on a different local coffee shop in a different neighborhood than your own. Drive out to Port Aransas for Barefoot Beans or Southside Corpus for Green Light Coffee. From Driftwood, Roastorium, and Eleanor’s Coffee Bar + Market, to Hester’s, Island Joe’s, and Coffee Waves, options are anything but sparse to make your coffee local in 2020.
Cook up a delicious meal for family or friends with local produce. You can browse your ingredients for said meals with local produce from a farmer's market. You can visit the Southside Farmer's Market on Saturdays at the Everhart Market Shopping Center (regulars say to get there early for the best options). You can also shop your grocery needs at the Downtown Farmer's Market every Wednesday evening at the Art Center of Corpus Christi. Or shop out on The Island Farmer's Market every other Thursday evening at the Island Presbyterian Church.
Find your style. If you’re looking to spruce up your home or wardrobe with a fresh look, visit a local consignment store like La Tiendita and Jypsy’s Treasure, with Birchwood Beauties, or Olive Blue. Perhaps you're wanting to declutter your closet. If so, sell to a resale shop like Threads. Maybe you're planning on expanding your wardrobe. If so you can hit up vintage shops like Chels Marie or any of the spots on Antique Row!
Give back. There are tons of local non-profits and organizations that can always use a helping hand. From volunteering, donating, participating in charity events, or spreading awareness of a certain cause, there are plenty of ways to get involved and give back to our local community. (P.S. not sure where to start? Head to our "Community" tab and check out any of our "Giving Back" stories, where we profile a different local non-profit for each issue.)
Soak up more culture. Plan a visit to the Art Museum of South Texas or learn about upcoming art shows at Kspace. Visit the Rockport Center for the Arts, Estelle Gallery, Port Aransas Art Center, The Art Center of Corpus Christi, and so many other incredible local galleries and museums. Score tickets to a theater show at Aurora Arts or Harbor Playhouse or go to the ballet. Art and expression inspire open-mindedness and creativity.
Resolve to love this year without limitations by practicing mindfulness and trying new things. With lots to do, it can be beneficial to slow down and be a tourist in your own city or connect with your local roots with a trip to the beach and an evening out on the town experiencing live music or local art.
Whatever you choose to set your sights and mind on in 2020, we hope you support our local culture. No matter your location or residence in the Coastal Bend, opt for the local choice this year.
