Who is Tim Pona?
● By Kylie Kinnett
For a little over a month now, “Who is Tim Pona?” has been popping up all over the local social media scene. With various random, photoshopped pictures, cryptic posts of childhood stories about a young Tim, and images of artwork created by the artist, the Coastal Bend has been left with one simple question: who is Tim Pona?
“[He] is an artist, musician, writer, poet, adult film star/director, and work traveler. He is a Renaissance Man. Above all, Time Pona is a local boy made good who wants, for the very first time, to share his passion for art with his hometown of Corpus Christi,” says Gerald Lopez, a member of the K Space Contemporary’s Board of Directors and Studio Manager.
Lopez explains that Pona grew up in Corpus Christi in the late 60s and 70s and, among other life events, his job as a bartender at The White Rabbit altered his artistic career forever. The rest of Pona’s story is undoubtedly an interesting one, but we think it best for you to unravel it for yourselves.
“He never had a notion to show anyone his work,” Lopez says, “doing it mostly for himself as a kind of therapy, until now.”
If you are interested in finding out just exactly who Tim Pona is, head over to the Schaudies Gallery inside K Space Art Studios (3rd floor) this Friday, April 6th from 5:30 to 9 PM for the opening of the exhibit. The exhibition will serve as a “retrospective” that spans several decades where never before seen paintings, drawings, sculptures, poems, and writings all from Mr. Tim Pona will be on display. The exhibition will run through April 21, 2018.We aren’t quite sure exactly who Tim Pona is, but we are more than ready to find out.
